Sukiyaki Night

October 19, 2010 was Sukiyaki Night at 20th.

What goes into this special but easy to duplicate dish?

Singkamas (turnips) sliced into matchsticks

Fresh green onions

Sweet red bell pepper

Thinly sliced beef tenderloin

Fresh eggs (added last to individual bowls)

Vermicelli

Chinese lettuce

The simmering pot

My MIL, LBI, keeping a careful eye on the sukiyaki.
She added some Kikkoman Sauce, mildly sweetened with a little sugar, to the simmering broth...

Tita Ning patiently waits  for her bowl, egg in hand...:-)

And now for my own bowl, served up by LBI

 Yum-my!

The DH was still at judo when we sat down to dinner, but he soon caught up.

Here he is (im)patiently waiting for his steaming bowl...since this is one of his absolute favorites. He never fails to order this when we eat at a Japanese restaurant. But even then, he would rather have his Mom's cooking over theirs!

He fondly remembers the nights LBI would make sukiyaki when he was still a boy. They would have it on the hibachi in the den which, with its wooden paneled walls gave off a Japanese ambiance. And all of them even would dress up in kimonos to get in character! I can only imagine what it was like...but it's no wonder that he loves sukiyaki, with such fun associations!

Can you see how happy he is here?

Cracking an egg with a flourish too!

The DH with his older brother, Anoy Ricky

This was an unexpected item on the table, but it seems this, too was part of the Sukiyaki Night tradition. LBI always included hotdogs for those(guests, maybe?) who weren't into sukiyaki. :-)

We had creamy buko (coconut) pie which the AZATRI's bought from El Ideal

After dinner, the DH took some shots of Isabelle and I (me hiding my belly bulge behind Isa, LOL)

That was my first Sukiyaki Night at 20th, and I can't wait for my next! Thank you Ma! And hopefully, the next one will include my SIL Arlene's california maki...and maybe even Malou's misono with lots and lots of beansprouts? For a truly Japanese-themed dinner. That would be awesome. :-)

Soon as that happens...I'll be back to post more photos. :)

Tonight (Oct 30), there's a Midnight Sale at a nearby mall, so DH and I will check it out...and maybe even get a headstart on our Christmas shopping, if we're lucky.

So, a bientot for now!
